About Chef Mei

料理で世界をつなぐ | Connecting the World Through Cooking

Welcome to My Culinary Journey

こんにちは (Konnichiwa)! I'm Mei Tanaka, the heart and soul behind YumiChef. My story begins in the vibrant streets of Osaka, where the sizzle of takoyaki and the steam from ramen shops created the soundtrack of my childhood. As a third-generation chef, the kitchen has always been my sanctuary, a place where tradition meets innovation, and where every ingredient tells a story.

After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu Tokyo with highest honors, I embarked on a culinary adventure that took me from the precise kitchens of Michelin-starred restaurants in Tokyo to the bustling bistros of Paris. However, my greatest joy wasn't found in professional kitchens, but in sharing my knowledge and passion with others who love cooking as much as I do.

Tradition

Honoring centuries-old Japanese cooking techniques while embracing modern innovations.

Connection

Building bridges between cultures through the universal language of food.

Education

Making professional cooking techniques accessible to home chefs worldwide.

My Philosophy: Cooking with Kokoro (心)

At YumiChef, we believe in cooking with 'kokoro' - heart and soul. This Japanese concept goes beyond mere technique; it's about putting your whole self into every dish you create. Whether you're making your first onigiri or perfecting your ramen broth, every step is an opportunity to connect with the food, its origins, and the people you're cooking for.

My teaching approach combines the precision of Japanese cooking with the warmth and accessibility that home cooks need. Through YumiChef, I've created a space where traditional Japanese cuisine meets global flavors, where beginners feel welcomed, and where experienced cooks find new challenges.

My Culinary Journey

2018-Present

Beyond the Kitchen

When I'm not filming cooking tutorials or developing new recipes, you'll find me exploring local farmers' markets, practicing Japanese calligraphy, or volunteering at community cooking programs. I believe that food is one of the most powerful ways to preserve culture and create connections across borders.

Through YumiChef, I've had the privilege of teaching thousands of students worldwide, from complete beginners to experienced home cooks. Each class, each recipe, and each interaction reinforces my belief that cooking is about more than following instructions – it's about creating moments of joy, discovery, and connection.

My Mission

At YumiChef, our mission is to make Japanese cooking accessible, enjoyable, and authentic for home cooks everywhere. We believe that understanding the 'why' behind techniques is just as important as mastering the 'how.' Through our platform, we're building a global community of food lovers who share our passion for Japanese cuisine and culinary exploration.
